Luxury vinyl plank is the most requested floor we install in the Tulsa metro, and for good reason. It gives you the look of wood with a sealed wear layer and a rigid core that shrugs off spilled drinks, tracked in rain, and dog nails. For kitchens, entryways, laundry rooms, and finished basements it solves the problem hardwood cannot.
The plank itself is only half the job. We check subfloor flatness and moisture before anything gets laid, because a rigid core plank telegraphs every dip and high spot underneath it. We correct what needs correcting, run the layout so seams fall away from the main sight lines, then finish the baseboards and transitions so the floor looks built in rather than dropped on top. Almost every question about LVP comes down to two of these four layers: the wear layer, which decides how long it looks new, and the core, which decides how it feels and how it handles an imperfect subfloor. Nobody selling you flooring should skip past either one.
A clear coat over the print. This is the layer that takes the scratches, and its thickness is the single best predictor of how long the floor keeps looking new.
A high resolution image of real wood. Better products use more unique plank images, so the same knot does not repeat every few boards.
The body of the plank, and what makes it waterproof. Stone based cores feel firm and bridge subfloor variation. Wood based cores feel softer and quieter.
Cushioning and sound control underneath. Attached pad is convenient, but a separate underlayment usually performs better, especially over concrete.
This is the number to ask about, and the one showroom tags most often bury. It is measured in mil, which is one thousandth of an inch.

Normal residential traffic
The sensible floor for bedrooms, offices, and low traffic living rooms.
Kitchens, entries, pets, kids
Where we point most Tulsa homeowners. The step from 12 to 20 mil costs less than most people expect.
Light commercial, very heavy use
More than a house needs unless you are running a home business out of the space.
A thicker plank does not mean a tougher surface. A 8mm plank with a 6 mil wear layer will show wear long before a 5mm plank with a 20 mil wear layer.
Both are waterproof. The difference is how the floor feels underfoot and how much subfloor imperfection it can hide.

These two get cross shopped constantly, and the honest answer is that laminate wins on two things people care about. Here is the real split.
If the room can ever get wet, choose LVP and stop there. If it stays dry and you are covering a lot of square footage on a budget, laminate is genuinely the better value and we will tell you so.
The honest summary: LVP is the most forgiving floor for a busy house. Water will not swell it, it handles pets and kids, it goes over concrete, and most installs are done in one to five days. What it will not do is get refinished. When it eventually wears out, it gets replaced rather than sanded back.
A dense stone polymer core that feels rigid underfoot and resists dents from furniture legs and appliance rollers. It is the safer pick over an uneven or older subfloor because it bridges minor variation better than a softer core.
A wood polymer core with more give and better sound absorption. Homeowners notice the difference in upstairs bedrooms and hallways where footsteps carry. It costs a little more per square foot than SPC.
The sealed wear layer and waterproof core mean a dishwasher leak is a cleanup, not a floor replacement. We run the plank under the toe kick line and seal the perimeter where it meets cabinetry.
Concrete slabs move moisture. We test before install and specify the right underlayment or moisture barrier rather than assuming the plank alone will handle it.
Running one plank through the main living areas without thresholds makes a house feel larger. We plan the layout from the longest sight line so the run reads straight from the front door.
Stair nosing and transitions are where cheap installs show. We match the nosing to the plank and cut transitions to the adjoining floor height instead of covering the gap with an oversized strip.
We measure every room, check subfloor flatness and moisture, and walk you through SPC and WPC options at different price points. You leave with a written line item quote and a realistic timeline.
We narrow it to planks that suit your rooms rather than whatever is on promotion, and say plainly where spending more changes the result.
Furniture moved, old flooring out, dips and high spots corrected. This is the step that decides how the floor performs.
Planks laid to the planned layout with tight seams, correct expansion gaps, and clean cuts around vents, casings and cabinetry.
We check every room with you, handle touch ups, clean the site, and go over care so the wear layer lasts.
